The X-Files Take Over
Reigning supreme over television’s Sunday night schedule for the last nine seasons, The X-Files has taken episodic TV where few shows have travelled before. Using alien abductions, poltergeists and shadowy government operatives as their starting points, X-Files shows careen madly through an alternate universe full of inexplicable phenomena and overt paranoia.
As such shows as Star Trek before it, X-Files has borne its own group of fervent admirers. X-Philes, as these fans proudly call themselves, produce thousands of newsgroup postings weekly, hold conventions, and are the instigators of endless conversations around Monday morning water coolers nationwide. Fox Television, the show’s distributor, has wisely refrained from flooding the market with X-Files merchandise for fear of consumer burnout, but cool items can be had.
Fox has also produced their Official X-Files web site, with tons of images, an episodic synopsis guide, and other areas of interest. This has produced many knock-offs everywhere from college student pages to the Sci-Fi Channel's massive Dominion site.
As more proof of the widespread popularity of the show,KCRW-FM, National Public Radio’s flagship radio station in Los Angeles, California, bid off a signed X-Files script for over $250US during its summer fund-raising drive.
Each season promises to explain more; each episode draws viewers deeper into the mysteries that surround the protagonists. What happened to Agent Mulder’s sister? Was Agent Scully abducted for secret medical experiments? What shadowy organization is behind the work of the Cancer Man? Are members of an alien civilization walking the Earth at this very moment? The more we know, the more we need to find out.
As Fox Mulder knows, the truth is out there.
