DGS Accepts Dangerous Assignment from Secret Agent Camp

March, 2001, Los Angeles. To recruit aspiring agents-in-training, Secret Agent Camp enlists Desktop Graphic Services for high-profile web site.

Secret Agent Camp siteGearing up for their Summer 2001 debut, and hoping to ride the publicity surrounding the release of the Antonio Banderas film “Spy Kids,”Secret Agent Camp owner Alan Lowis asked DGS principal Eric Oxenberg to design a new graphically-rich web site to entrigue and entice the target demographic of well-off 30-somethings in the California area.

After perusing spy-related material, Eric chose the well-known “spy suitcase with gun” theme and carried it forward through the site. Graphics contained hidden links which were revealed on mouse-over, an entire fictional story line was developed, and fake service ID cards were even invented to add realism and excitement. Click on a screen, right, to see actual size.

A secure HTTP server was utilized to enable a CGI-based reservation system, which involved building a user form whose data was parsed in PERL and forwarded to the company’s sales office as plain text for entry into their database system. DGS also handled the domain transfer and hosting services, as well as administration and updates.

Spy cardFor scenario pages, Eric designed credit-card-sized ID graphics with authentic-looking details.

The result? A web site exciting enough to prompt Los Angeles ABC television affiliate KABC to produce a 3-minute lifestyle segment that went on-air in June, 2001, plus other press attention from newspaper and magazine publishers.

One item which didn’t make it into the site: banner sign-up ads with the promotional idea of giving away “Spy Suicide Pills” which were acquired at a local novelty store. The concept, while fun, didn’t fit into the graphic scheme.
