DGS Produces First Annual KPOP Promo Cookbook
September 1998, Los Angeles. Desktop Graphic Services produces cookbook for Jacor Communications Winter Promotion.
Working with San Diego-based Jacor Communications’ easy-listening AM outlet KPOP was an eye-opening (and tasty) experience. The assignment: produce a holiday cookbook of approximately 100 pages in length, and make the recipes appealing to KPOP’s senior demographic audience.
The recipes, contributed from a combination of San Diego-area listeners, local celebrities, and noted music and entertainment figures, ran the gamut from candied marshmelloes to complete Thanksgiving dinners, with a special section devoted entirely to the (primarily Italian) entrees of gourmet singer Johnny Mathis.
With a goodly amount of detective work, DGS principal Eric Oxenberg sifted through the ingredient lists, formatted the layouts in a pleasingly readable form, and found whimsical illustrations to show off the book’s contents. DGS was responsible for copy editing, design and production of the finished piece.
The use of casual typography throughout made the text warm and friendly. The cover treatment, from stock photography sources and composited by Mr. Oxenberg, stood out when the books were distributed in pre-holiday promotional events by the radio station.
Result: The station was extremely pleased with the finished books, sponsors had a useful premium to give away, and the hearts (and tummies) of San Diego residents were filled with great -- if old-fashioned -- recipes for cooking through the winter holiday season.
