Internet-Enhanced Physician Practices Deploying a PACS: Issues to consider Application Service Provider PACS: Analyzing Costs of Service Towards A New World of Communications in Medicine
Mission Statement |
WEB SERVICESUse of the Internet can make electronic image distribution throughout (and beyond) the health care enterprise an affordable reality. eMed.net This comprehensive service, available through an ASP model as a monthly subscription provides the hardware, software, network, and around-the-clock support needed for facilities of any size to distribute images and results via World Wide Web. A customized web site is constructed for clients; eMed also handles domain-name registration, issuance of security certificates, server setup and integration, and all necessary network connections. No capital outlay is needed because no equipment acquisition is involved. The web site, used by referring physicians, specialists and radiologists to gain access to images, has security features exceeding those proposed by the US federal government. It includes both final reports and First Impressions(tm) (radiologists spoken interpretations in the form of audio files). The web site can be used to let referring physicians know the imaging practices locations, hours, available services, and areas of expertise. Educational coverage of radiology technologies and procedures affording CME credit is also available to referring physicians on the web site. FRAMEWAVE Web This technology uses the Internet and secure intranets to make images, reports, and multimedia files available enterprise wide. Referring physicians gain desktop access to radiology results and images, and radiologists on call can view images from their home computers (while retaining access to sophisticated image-optimization tools). This client/server system uses standard computer platforms and common telecommunications services, but employs encryption, authentication, verification, and auditing to ensure data security. Implementation is scalable to suit any institution, as the number of client systems is unlimited. FRAMEWAVE Web, through compliance with Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) and Health Level 7 standards, is fully compatible with existing picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) and hospital/radiology information systems. |
